D2: Joining of Multi-material Assemblies by the MultiMaterial-Welding Technology – Development of an Online Monitoring System

The company MultiMaterial-Welding with research partner FHNW has developed and patented a broad portfolio of new and innovative concepts and solutions to join different materials. One of those is MM-Welding`s LiteWWeightTM concept, which is especially designed for sandwich structures with honeycomb and foamed core materials. Ultrasonic energy is used to punch a thermoplastic connection element (LiteWWeightTM Pin) through the top-layer into the porous structure of the core. Thanks to the ultrasonic excitation, the thermoplastic connection element melts at the interface, infiltrates the porous structure and creates a highly interlocked bond with the substrate material in less than 1s.
